Saren Sasaki (佐々木咲恋 Sasaki Saren) is a character in Princess Connect! and Princess Connect! Re:Dive. She is the guild leader of Sarendia, and the manager of the Sarendia Orphanage. Saren was also the former deputy leader of NIGHTMARE.

Appearance

Saren has long blonde hair and clear blue eyes. She wears a white and blue green dress with a white cape around her. She is also wearing two black ribbons on both sides of her hair and sporting a single white feather hair clip with a blue jewel at the center. Saren wears a pair of white gloves with black cuffs and three purple lines on the center, with the middle line being larger. She wears two white stockings, with the waists being colored purple surrounded by golden cuffs, and a pair of white and gold heel boots. Saren carries with her a white sword holster on her left waist. Her weapon is a medium sword.

In the real world, Saren's appearance is very similar to her avatar within Astrum, with the distinct differences being that her eyes are hazel colored and she wears black and white ribbons on both sides of her hair.

Personality

As a child, Saren was timid and a frequent victim of bullying by the boys in her class, being unable to defend herself. However, it was thanks to Yuuki's protectiveness of her that she decided to not burden him with always coming to her aid, learning how to defend herself and be more self-assertive, especially against people who pick on others. By the time she and Yuuki became teenagers, Saren had become more mature and self-confident, as well as being popular in her school, something Yuuki notes with clear shock is unlike how she was when they were children.

Due to having lived much of her childhood in poverty, Saren greatly values how money is used, whether it's by her or someone else she knows. As a result, she heavily disapproves money being spent recklessly and fiercely haggles anything, be it daily necessities like food or major financial negotiations. This would later become a useful skill of her's in Astrum when it concerns keeping the Sarendia Orphanage's funds above water, throwing herself in the role of a merchant with many side businesses. Although coming from a now wealthy family, Saren has stated that she refuses to ask anything from her father's wealth just to keep the orphanage running, preferring that she be the one that does so and dislikes people who do business with her simply because she is the daughter of her father, showing how much Saren wants to be independent of her father and his connections.

Saren is also quite caring of those she holds dear, treating Suzume Amano less like her personal maid and more of a sister, and cherishes her bond with both Akino Toudou and Yuuki. She is also fiercely protective of the children in her orphanage, their well-being one of her top priorities. It's such that she can immediately be set off if anybody dares harm them and will not hesitate to throw herself into danger if it means keeping them safe.

History

Saren's family were financially poor and lived in poverty for much of her childhood. At one point, during her school's lunch period, a group of bullies pushed her around until Yuuki jumped in and came to her defense, at the cost of becoming the bullies' target instead. Since then, Saren and Yuuki had become close friends even after her family had become wealthy.

In Princess Connect!

Saren tags along Twinkle Wish to go after Okto and Muimi after learning the former was a mole for the Seven Crowns. She and the group caught up to the two and their cohorts atop a mountain, where they were set upon by monsters that Okto and Muimi had under their control. After Hiyori was injured, Saren personally dealt with Okto while Yuuki and the others took on Muimi and their underlings. They were able to win, but the duo successfully retreated, much to Saren's frustration.

Chapter 2: Regina Geas

Saren arriving to stop the fight at Caon.

Saren reaches Caon's headquarters and immediately intervenes in the battle between Yuuki, Kokkoro, Suzume, the Caon Guild members and Christina Morgan, ordering both sides to drop their weapons and cease. After chastising Christina for her unruly behavior, she dismisses her and wishes to make amends to Caon for what she did. Afterwards, upon arriving back to the orphanage, she welcomes Yuuki and Kokkoro to stay in the orphanage for the night in gratitude for helping and keeping Suzume safe during their journey. The following day, she set off to Caon with Jun to try and reach a peaceful negotiation between humans and beastfolk, hoping to keep the peace between both races intact.

Etymology

The name Saren means "blossom" (咲) (sa) and "love" (恋) (ren).
Saren's surname Sasaki means "help, aid" (佐) (sa) and "tree, wood" (木) (ki).

Trivia

In League of Legends, Leona's Damwon Gaming skin – one of their skins from winning the 2020 World Championship – draws inspiration from Saren after their support BeryL (Cho Geonhee), an avid Priconne Re:Dive player, asked Riot Games to design his skin after her. One commissioned art post shared on the League Korean Instagram promoting the skin also includes both Beryl and Damwon Leona imitating Saren's sign pose.^[1]
